Last year, Heikki Kovalainen enjoyed his best result of the season at the Japanese Grand Prix. On Sunday, however, Kovalainen was unable to repeat his second-place 2007 finish, after an engine failure relegated him to the sidelines. Despite this disappointment, the Fuji Speedway remains a firm favourite with the McLaren driver and we caught up with him to find out about his Japanese event, and discover a little more about how he likes to spend his time ‘in the office’ over a race weekend…

Even when Fernando Alonso and Nelson Piquet Jr were confirmed at Renault, the French team’s former driver, Heikki Kovalainen, was all smiles, confident he would find a cockpit for 2008. And late last year Kovalainen was proved right when he was offered the seat left vacant by Alonso at McLaren.
On Monday, at the launch of the MP4-23 in Stuttgart, the Finn made his first public appearance for the British team. With new team mate Lewis Hamilton to contend with, the 26 year-old certainly won’t be in for an easy ride, but he already seems to be relishing the challenge. Here Kovalainen reveals his hopes for 2008 and discloses a little of his strategy for the season ahead…

Lewis Hamilton may have won Sunday’s Japanese Grand Prix, but the happiest man on the Fuji podium was undoubtedly Heikki Kovalainen. After an intense battle with compatriot Kimi Raikkonen in the closing laps, Kovalainen came home second for his maiden Formula One podium - and Renault’s first of 2007.
When he returned to the motorhome after the post-race press conference, all he wanted to do was check out his trophy. But when he was finally persuaded to talk, he left you in no doubt that he believes this is only the start of bigger things to come…

At first glance Finland seems an unlikely birthplace for a Formula One driver. On the edge of the Arctic Circle, the Scandinavian state has no major tracks, no auto industry to speak of and temperatures not exactly conducive to motor racing. Yet still it continues to produce greats such as Keke Rosberg, Mika Hakkinen and Kimi Raikkonen.
How? Perhaps the explanation is ‘sisu’, a uniquely Finnish concept that defines a state of mind allowing one to override any obstacle. We asked Heikki Kovalainen, Finland’s latest hopeful, to explain his ascent to Formula One racing with Renault…
